Rajasthan – the land of maharajas has always been in my travel list. I have explored both Northern India and Southern India but western part of the country always eluded me. Though my mother used to tell me that when I was small they took me there but I don’t have any memories of the same. So I and my wife decided that we will go to Rajasthan and explore this wonderful state. The month chosen for the travel was December and the cities on the travel radar were Jodhpur, Udaipur and Jaipur.
We went through all the travel review websites and shortlisted our hotels and prepared our travel itinerary. We booked a 7 days trip and the first leg of the journey was starting from Delhi. We had a train from Delhi at night to catch which will drop us at Jodhpur in morning. So we reached railway station on time and took our berths in AC 3-tier coach. Since it was already late we finished our dinner and slept.
We had booked a desert resort in Jodhpur which offered one night stay in camp and one night stay in resort. This resort was some 80 KM outside city. We had already booked a cab which will stay with us for 3 days during our stay at Jodhpur and finally will drop us at Udaipur. When we got down at Jodhpur station the cab was already waiting. The driver has put the luggage in the car and we were all ready to start our journey of mesmerizing Rajasthan. It took us around 1 ½ hour to reach the resort. We were welcomed there with a drink and were given a room to get refreshed. They informed us to get ready by 1 hour as lunch will be ready and we have to start the journey towards the desert camp. The resort was very nice with an ethnic setup. It was an amalgam of both old and new. The small huts were made under which one can sit and have lunch. It had nice and cozy rooms and a swimming pool. The food spread was good with both vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. After we finished lunch we were all set to leave. We sat in a jeep along with one old aged couple who have come all the way from Gujarat. The jeep took us to a sand dune safari which was an awesome experience and after that left us at desert camp. Our tent was ready and we made ourselves comfortable. It was beautiful camp with a double bed and a separate partition for bathroom. We rested in the tent till evening. They had organized a cultural event in the evening. They placed soft cushions on the sand where we sat and enjoyed it. After that we finished our dinner and went to our beds.
We woke in the morning and found it to be chilling. We went for camel ride which took us to the sunrise point. There we clicked few pictures and came back. We finished our breakfast and the jeep took us back to the resort. There we rested and explored the resort. There was one handicraft shop in the resort. We bought couple of artifacts from there. Then in the evening we had our dinner. Since the nights were cold they have lighted a fire near our table which kept us warm. Also an old artist was playing flute while we were having our dinner. It was nice to hear a melodious local music in the night chillness.
We checked out from the resort in the morning after breakfast to reach Jodhpur via the same cab which brought us here. We visited Mehrangarh fort which was built in 1459. The fort was huge and one can have the entire view of Jodhpur from there. The blue rooftop houses around the fort give you the feeling that whole town has been painted blue. We visited several places inside palace and took a guide who explained the history of the palace. After that we visited Jaswant Thada which is built out of intricately carved marble.
Then we started our journey towards Udaipur. On the way we stopped to see famous Ranakpur Jain Temple and by the time we entered Udaipur it was night. We paid our taxi driver 3 days fare and checked-in in our hotel. Our room was lake facing one. The setup was old but a comfortable one. There was a beautiful terrace restaurant where we can view the Lake Pichola and city palace. We had our dinner there in a dim candlelight.
Since we have come so far we thought why not visit the famous Sreenath Ji temple in Nathdwara which is 48 Km from Udaipur. We got up early morning and got ready to leave by 5 A.M. Since the route goes through hilly areas and temple closes early to be opened only in evening. We reached around 7 and after visiting the temple we enjoyed breakfast there. We had poha and dhokla. It was different from what we usually have it in North India. We loved it so much that we even got it packed to take it with us. Then after reaching back Udaipur we went to Saheliyon-ki-Bari and City Palace. Tired from our day long journey we came back to our room and rested. However we wanted to visit one more place about which we heard from our relatives. It was Bagore-ki-Haveli which is built on the waterfront of Lake Pichola. The haveli stages Rajasthani traditional dance and music. They showed various Rajasthani folk dance forms with description on its origination and significance.
After that we came back to our hotel to take rest as we had to get early to catch the train to Jaipur.
We woke up early as we had a train to catch at 5:00 in the morning. We reached station on time and took our seats. It was an AC Chair Car Compartment. We reached Jaipur by afternoon and took an auto to hotel. We rested their whole day as we were already very tired from last 2 days journey.
After breakfast we left hotel for doing local sightseeing. We visited Hawa Mahal, Amer Fort, Jal mahal and Jantar Mantar. All places were picturesque which kept our camera always in ready to click mode. The taxi service was good and the taxi guy even took us to factory outlet where we purchased famous bandini sarees for our relatives.
There was nothing to do much on Day 7. We had got complimentary movie tickets as part of hotel package. We got up late and after finishing the packing we went to nearby mall to see the movie ‘Hobbit’. We did our lunch there and in the evening we had our train back to our home. So we checked out from hotel and took the cab to railway station to reach our home the next day.
